Welcome to the Gibraltar Heritage Trust website.
Gibraltar's unique
history has left it a legacy of one of the most complete systems of fortifications in the world. These span over 1000 years and range from the time of the Moors in the 8th Century, through the Middle Ages and up to the 20th Century which included the development of the torpedo proof naval base, the airfield and 30 miles of Second World War tunnels within the Rock itself. Regrettably Gibraltar's heritage is decaying and many of its unique fortifications and buildings have been maltreated and neglected. The preservation and restoration of its historic and domestic architecture is the responsibility of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust and its members.
The Trust was formed in 1986 and, eventually, took over the protection and restoration of listed ancient monuments from the Gibraltar Museum Committee, which was dissolved in 1989.
