>> YEAR IN THE LIFE OF GIBRALTAR <<

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust has announced the launch of a major new initiative designed to create a photographic record of everyday life in Gibraltar during the course of a year.  The project is anticipated to be turned into a book which will be sold to the public at the end of 2011.

The project was commenced as one of the many ideas to come out of “History and Publications” sub-committee of the Trust.  The project leader is David Parody, a well known local photographer, who has collected a group of photographers together for this purpose.

The project will seek to record not just important events that take place over the next twelve months but also, and probably more importantly, everyday life in Gibraltar.  This record of how things were done or how places looked in 2011 aims to serve as a historical document in the future in capturing life in Gibraltar.

The photographic journal will seek to chronicle every day events like tablita and cards being played in Eastern Beach, through to full military parades, political rallies, sporting, cultural, religious ceremonies and people in their workplaces.

Photography will take place between 1st July 2010 and 30th June 2011.

The Trust would like to seek the collaboration of the public by asking them to submit their ideas of what they think are typical Gibraltarian scenarios, events or groupings that should be recorded for posterity.  Ideas, no matter how irrelevant you may think they are today, should be emailed to yearofgibraltar@gmail.com.

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust is pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s Heritage Awards.  This year two awards have been given for Individual Buildings and there has been one special commendation award.

The first Group Heritage Award is awarded to Grand Magazine for its sensitive transformation into a modern facility by Commercial Developments Inc. Limited.

This 19th Century magazine is a worthy example of how derelict historic structures can not only be reused, but also become focal architectural monuments within modern developments.

The second Group Heritage Award is awarded to The Holy Trinity Cathedral for the renovation of the exterior of the cathedral carried out under the Rock of Ages Campaign. The architecture of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is unique. This latest renovation of the exterior has helped to enhance the cathedral and its environs.

In both instances, the heritage-sensitive approach to the redevelopment and renovation of these sites is a credit to all involved; developers, architects, contractors, and the residents and users who are now the custodians of these buildings.

A Special Commendation has been awarded to Gilbert Podesta in recognition of the many years he has dedicated to the preservation and protection of Gibraltar’s Heritage. Mr Podesta has been an active advocate for the preservation of Gibraltar’s Heritage for many years, serving until recently as a Trustee on the Board of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust.

Presentations of Awards took place on Thursday 17th June at the Main Guard House. Awards were presented by the Hon. P. Caruana, Chief Minister.

The second Group Heritage Award was granted to The Old Naval Hospital in recognition of the sensitive way the site has been redeveloped.

In both instances, the heritage-sensitive approach to the redevelopment of these sites is a credit to all involved, developers, architects, contractors, and the residents who are now the custodians of these buildings.

The first Individual Heritage Award was awarded to Richard Labrador for the restoration of John Snow House an ex-MOD married quarter in the South District dating to 1903.

The second individual Heritage Award was awarded to Wayne Estella for the recovery of 5 Hargrave’s Parade an example of Gibraltar’s local architecture which has been brought back into use as a home from near-derelict condition.
